Some artists experiment with bloodletting, blood consumption, self-mutilation and animal slaughtering as performance art. Quite frankly, I haven't completely digested many of those artists' true reasoning for their manners of expressions. Still, I found the following artists' performances visually intriguing and a little more convincing than those of the others.
Hermann Nitsch is an Austrian artist, who is especially well-known for his experimental performances such as Theater of Orgies and Mysteries and the 6-Day Play. During his 6-Day Play, he juxtaposes slaughtered animal intestines with quasi-religious icons to satirize and question the moral ethics of atavistic religion and sacrifice.

Ron Athey is an American artist, who employs sadomasochism in his performances. He often incorporates piercing, bloodletting and tattooing to explore the relationships between desire, sexuality and traumatic experience and confronts the pre-convinced ideas about the body in relation to masculinity and religious iconography. He claims that his performing style creates rituals of redemption and through that, he achieves personal transformations.
