While the majority is feeling rather 'vamped out,' I'm still like 'bite me.' Here comes Daybreakers, another vampire newbie by yet another sibling duo, Spierig brothers.
Set in the year 2019, the world portrayed in the film is bizarrely populated by vampires. As human nears extinction, the vampires' food supply rapidly runs out. When their blood levels are low, the vampires get a bit crankier than usual, to say the least. Thus, a depressed vampire (played by Ethan Hawke) who is a researcher at a human harvesting facility, is working so hard to discover a blood substitute for his fellow starving vamps. He is also the vampire equivalent of a strict animal-loving vegan who sympathizes with human, refuses to consume human blood and only feeds on the substitute.
Even in such futuristic tale, the classic rules of vampire seem to stand strong; they die when they are exposed to sunlight and get stake at the heart, can't be seen in mirrors and heal quickly. Now, what may surprise us here is that how vampire-friendly the world has become. My personal fixations include; a lavish Chrysler equipped with daytime driving mode to protect them from the sunlight, coffee stands serve coffee tinged with blood, and subway system allows them to move around during the day. I also loved the fact that vampires from the near future are portrayed as chain-smokers.
Daybreakers is atypical work of recent vampire craze in which many newbies tend to babe-bait us with The Cullens or The Stackhouses. Instead, it certainly add a few new twists to this overdone genre and that is probably why I’m already craving for its sequel.
